Maintenance for wooden skirting boards

Posted by Joseph Schaffarczyk on

Skirting boards take a bit of a beating throughout their life, it you’ve started to notice them looking a little tattered, maybe it's time for an update. Without doubt, we all want our homes to appear the best they can possibly be. With this in mind, there’s a way to fix up your skirting boards and get them looking shiny and new. Read on to find out more.

Basic maintenance

Like any piece of furniture, skirting boards require some level of maintenance to prevent them from looking old and worn and worst of all - dirty. Whatever they are made of, they will require maintenance and need to be cleaned regularly to ensure they continue to look great and stay in good condition, this certainly applies to solid oak skirting or wooden skirting in general.

In this comprehensive guide we have outlined a few simple steps for the ideal way to dust and clean your skirting boards:

  • Start by dusting your skirting boards with a microfibre, light cloth
  • Follow this by using brush attachment on your vacuum
  • Wipe the surfaces with soap and water and a damp cloth
  • Get through any stubborn stains with an acidic solution like vinegar, bleach or polish
  • Wipe down the skirting with clean water to remove any excess solution

Removing difficult stains

If a soap and water doesn’t appear to be working in removing stains, we recommend using a slightly more acidic solution.

Rinse the cloth in vinegar and warm water and wipe the skirting board with this mixture. The mild acidity in the vinegar breaks down rough patches of dirt, making them easier to remove.

After, clean with the soap mixture to prevent the vinegar smell from overpowering your house, and then wipe down with plain clean water.

If you want to avoid the  smell of vinegar, you can use bleach or plain polish instead, however, make sure you read the manufacturer’s guidelines, this will prevent any harm to your skirting boards.
